Does my roof have a leak?
If you are suspicious that your roof is leaking, always check for discolouration in your ceiling and walls on the top floor of your house or in the loft. If there are areas of damp around the upper parts of your walls then this could signify a leak. It goes without saying that signs of dripping is also a sign. If you would like a professional to survey the roof, try searching roofers near me in Poole to find local results.
Does Insurance cover my roof?
Firstly, if you are considering roof repair, always read the small print of your insurance documents. Generally, most roofs are covered by buildings and contents policies from our experience.
Why is my roof covered in moss?
Particular types of algae and moss are found on roofs that are shaded and typically face north, or have overhanging trees which prevent direct sunlight from hitting it. The lack of direct sunlight and heat from within the loft space creates an ideal damp, warm environment for said algae and moss to flourish.
Condensation or a leaking roof?
Condensation: can form in your attic or loft if moist air becomes trapped by your insulation, this is not a reason for alarm. If it persists, keep an eye on the quantity of water after heavy rainfall.

Leaks: this usually comes as a consistent flow of water, usually as a direct result of snow, ice or rainfall.
Are solar panels suitable for my roof?
The first thing to check is whether your roof faces south. Next, the ideal angle of pitch for solar panels sits between 35 - 40 degrees, however angles from 10 to 60 degrees are also suitable. Finally, there will need to be access to your roof space in order for the installation of the inverter to be completed, which is roughly the size of a microwave oven.
Does my roof face South?
If you have a compass around the house or built into your smartphone, use this to check the direction of your roof. Alternatively, open Google Maps and zoom into your house location and use the compass on the map interface.
Does my roof contain asbestos?
In the United Kingdom, asbestos was banned in 1985, so if your house was built after that year, then it will most likely not have it. Any roof repair carried out after this time should also have brought the subject to light. Asbestos cement was used until 1999 and you would need to have an examination to determine if your cement contains it. Determining whether a roof's tiles contain asbestos is difficult via a visual examination, but we always recommend seeking the advice from professionals and never attempt to remove a suspect asbestos item yourself.
Is my roof tile or slate?
Tile Roofs
Tiled roofs can come in a variety of colours and very in shapes too. The contours are typically either corrugated or ridged. A tile is much thicker compared to slate and can often be found overlapping or interlocking with each other. There is an exception however when it comes to clay roof tiles, which can have a very similar formation to that of a slate roof. You can tell the difference by the thickness, because slate is always thin.

Slates Roofs
If you are unsure, there are some typical things to tell the difference. Slates are normally grey-blue in colour, very thin and normally rectangular in shape. They typically fit adjacent to each other.
Can my roof support human weight?
We only suggest that professionals with the correct safety gear and technical knowledge attempt walking over the roof of a house. The risk isn’t worth it and it could only lead to more expensive roof repair work having to be carried out.
Why is my roof leaking?
A roof can leak because of a number of reasons, such as; loose or damaged tiles and slates, damaged or corroded roof flashings, compromised guttering, ineffective or old pointings and finally weather damage.
Why is my roof sagging?
A variety of reasons can cause a sagging roof such as; timber rot, weakened beams / joists, framing issues or a change in roofing cover i.e. a heavier cover than original covering. Please contact a professional when considering any form of roof repair.

Guttering - Questions and Answers

Why do my gutters make so much noise?
Debris could be caught in the gutter which is disrupting the flow of water, their position could be too far away from the roof edge or a bracket may have become loose resulting in a rattling or vibrating sound. If you are not in a position to assess the gutters yourself, please contact a professional roofing contractor.
Why do my gutters overflow?
Leaves and other debris can cause guttering to become blocked and prevent water flow. If a blockage continues to grow with more debris, it can cause the guttering to completely overflow and apply excess strain on the fixtures and fittings.
Why do my gutters drip?
There could be holes or cracks that could be the cause, or more than likely one of the connectors hasn't been installed correctly. If neither of these are the problem, then it could be the rubber in between that has become loose or perished.
